Based on the famous Taiwanese folk tale – The Grandaunt Tiger(虎姑婆 Hǔgūpó) which most Taiwanese people grow up hearing.
改編自有名的台灣民間故事《虎姑婆》。
Once upon a time, a tiger wants to become a human. After hundred years of practice, someone tells it that the last step to fully becoming a human is to eat a couple of children. One day, it comes to a small village to look for kids…
Great story! A nicely told and interesting story, great for learners to practice reading traditional characters. A very engaging read, I learnt some new words – the reinforcement and definitions of new vocabulary worked really well, without disrupting the flow of the story.
Finally, Great Taiwan Mandarin Content! Most graded readers are based on HSK and Chinese as it is spoken in Mainland China, so I deeply appreciate finally having Taiwanese Mandarin content like this. I hope that Abby will release many more stories in the near future.
This book is both scary and hilarious; it’s interesting and helpful, which is difficult to find in educational material. Vocabulary repeats often enough to begin to memorize it, but not annoying either. We need books like this, to teach Taiwanese and Traditional Mandarin.
For anyone with a lower-intermediate level, I totally recommend this. It will build confidence to finish a book in Mandarin. Get the ebook (not only audio), even if you think your Chinese is higher than the level indicated, because the reading pace is natural (fast), and the vocabulary list will be useful for later reference. The questions at the end of book is nice as a self-quiz.

Perfect for Mandarin leaners! I made the right decision choosing this story as my first book to read in Mandarin. It’s nice to be able to read stories from Taiwan as someone learning Taiwanese Mandarin, but even people learning other varieties of Mandarin can enjoy and appreciate this well written short book. Since this was the first ever book in Mandarin that I read, it took me some time to get through it, but every chapter was great and not super long and convoluted. I can’t recommend any other book than this one for beginners wanting to start reading in the language. I will definitely be purchasing the author’s other works!
How do I know which level is right for me? 怎麼知道哪一本書適合我的程度呢?
Check out the preview. If you are able to read the book and follow the story while encountering a few words you don’t know every 1 or 2 pages, this book is fine for your level.
Listening along while you read allows you to pick up on not only tones as well as unfamiliar words, it also aids in understanding what natural Chinese would sound like in this context. However, it depends on your studying method.
