Do you want to improve your Chinese reading with books? In this post, I am going to recommend the best Chinese novels for intermediate students.
1. 小王子 The Little Prince
The Little Prince (The Petit Prince) is a classic French story. If you have read the story in English or your first language before, it’s easy to read it in Chinese. If you think it’s just a story for children, I first read the book when I was 20, and it’s one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. 法國經典故事，如果你已經讀過英文或原文了，再讀中文會很好懂。
2. 哈利波特 Harry Potter (for at least upper-intermediate and above)
I know that there are many wizard words we don’t use in real life, but if you already know the story, it’s easy to follow.
3. 遜咖日記（or 葛瑞的囧日記） Diary of a Wimpy Kid
This is the English Chinese bilingual edition. You can check the original English text after reading the Chinese version! It’s translated as “小屁孩日记” （simplified）in China.
4. 虎姑婆 The Tiger Aunt: Chinese Graded Reader
Looking for a good Chinese graded reader written in Traditional Chinese and using Taiwanese vocabulary? Check out this series! This book is based on the famous Taiwanese folk tale – The Grandaunt Tiger(虎姑婆 Hǔgūpó) which most Taiwanese people grow up hearing.
It’s best for pre-intermediate and intermediate learners. If you find the books above too difficult for you, I suggest you start with Chinese graded reader that are easier to read.
